Nursing philosophy is the core of nursing practice. It is a perspective that I feel can differ from nurse to nurse based off of their views and experiences. According to Poliforni, “a philosophy will deem some ideas correct, others inconsistent, and some simply wrong” (pg 3). Philosophies are ever changing and can be proven right or wrong. The important thing is to be able to adapt and change views when it means putting patient’s first. Whether a registered nurse, or an advanced practice nurse, consistency of actions is key for patients.
I believe a key value to nursing philosophies is empathy. Without empathy, it is very difficult to be able to be a patient advocate. Having the ability to put oneself in a patients shoes, and really understand what they are going through, is a philosophy I would like to strive for as an advanced practice nurse. “One of the basic building blocks of ethics and ethical conduct towards others is empathy” (Dinikins 2011).
In conclusion, nursing is a profession where something new is learned everyday. Not one day is the same as another. Being able to adapt a philosophy and include empathy for my patients is something I intend on practicing as an advanced practice nurse.

It is a personal perspective that can vary among nurses based on their experiences and beliefs. The ability to adapt and change views when prioritizing the needs of patients is crucial in nursing. This answer will focus on the value of empathy in nursing philosophy and its significance in being a patient advocate.
Empathy is a key value in nursing philosophies as it forms the foundation for ethical conduct towards others, particularly patients. Without empathy, it becomes challenging to truly understand and connect with patients on a deeper level. It is the ability to put oneself in a patient’s shoes and comprehend their emotions, fears, and struggles. Empathy enables nurses to provide holistic care that addresses not only the physical needs of patients but also their psychological and emotional well-being.
Being empathetic allows nurses to establish meaningful relationships with their patients, fostering trust and open communication. Patients often feel more comfortable and supported when they sense that their healthcare provider genuinely understands and cares for them. This can positively impact their overall experience and contribute to better health outcomes.
Furthermore, empathy plays a vital role in being an effective patient advocate. By empathizing with patients, nurses can better comprehend their unique situations and advocate for their rights and preferences. Advocacy involves speaking up for patients, ensuring they receive appropriate care, and safeguarding their best interests. Without empathy, nurses may not fully grasp the challenges faced by their patients, ultimately hindering their ability to effectively advocate on their behalf.
In conclusion, empathy holds great significance in nursing philosophy. It allows nurses to establish strong connections with their patients, fostering trust and open communication. Additionally, empathy is essential in being an effective patient advocate, as it enables nurses to understand and address the unique needs and concerns of each individual. Incorporating empathy into nursing practice ensures that patient care remains holistic, compassionate, and patient-centered.
