Imagining a Benedictine Monastery using a book called “Benedict’s

In his Rule, Benedict prescribes several elements of daily life for his monks, sometimes in excruciating detail. In order to fulfill their monastic obligations followers of Benedict’s Rule would have required a specific space with particular dimensions and attributes.

And though Benedict provides no blueprints or even general discussions of it, it is possible to reconstruct a hypothetical rendering of the building itself based on the monks’ obligations. For this essay, please use a close textual reading and a heavy dose of historical imagination to reconstruct one central facet of a Benedictine monastery’s physical plant. Describe the space itself, how and when it was used, and what other parts of the monastery it might have connected to. Your description must be based on a close reading of Benedict’s Rule. This paper also needs to be in Chicago Style.
