ASSIGNMENT:

You will be visiting the exhibition “Blue Prints: The Pioneering Photographs of Anna Atkins” and writing a 4-page paper based on this visit. Instructions: The paper assignment is open ended in that you should select a topic or approach which is of interest to you.

. It is expected that you have a minimum of 3 sources that are integrated into your paper. The paper should be about 4 pages typed and double spaced. Suggested issues/questions to address in your paper • Discuss the unique photographic technique that Anna Atkins used and why was it significant at the time, that is, what is a cyanotype? • What were others doing to create photographs during this period? • How is her technique similar or different from the daguerreotype and the calotype? • Why was she making these early photographically illustrated books? • What is the content/subject matter of her photographs? • How does their production fit within the mid-nineteenth century English cultural environment? • How does Atkins work compare/contrast with the work of her contemporaries? • How did she “publish” her books? • Did Atkins work with others on her working process or publishing endeavors, and if so, how? • How do her illustrations differ or compare to other contemporaneous books on plant life? These above questions are meant as guidelines and suggestions of topics to include in your paper, but you can address other ideas that you identify through your research.
